Hepworth Gallery Visit.

Today, I visited The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield for some primary research. With the success of my work for Darrell Viner, I intend to design an identity for a fine artist (possibly a third year fine art student).

As much as I appreciate the work inside the building. What really impressed me was the beautiful identity created for the gallery. At the heart of the identity is a bespoke font, created by APFEL

Each letterform reflects the angles of the building itself, specifically the sharp angles of the roof.
The typeface was fully intergrated within the gallery. From the quotes on the wall to the instructions for how to operate the tap. I loved the attention to detail and the sheer beauty of the gallery. Its certainly the best gallery I have visited and I'd happily go again.

The building itself is beautiful. For the last module, I had researched The Hepworth so I've seen photos of it, but to see the building in person was amazing.  It was designed by award winning architect Sir David Chipperfield in 2011 The Hepworth Wakefield is a structure composed of ten trapezoidal blocks; its upper-level galleries are lit by natural light from large windows in the pitched roofs. Its windows have views of the river, historic waterfront and the city skyline. The building's façade is clad with self-compacting pigmented concrete made on site, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The architects selected the material to emphasise the gallery's sculptural appearance.

Examples of wayfinding.
